Prevent injuries in children

Are your children complaining about aches and pains? Unsure whether they have growing pains or an injury? Did you know out physiotherapists are qualified to assess and treat children aged 7 up and are trained in the safeguarding of children?

Emma is our Lead Paediatric Physiotherapist, along with Rebecca they have put together some tips on how to prevent injuries in children.

  1. If your child is doing any sporting activities ensure the correct safety equipment is in place. Do they have their helmet, gloves, shin pads, knee pads etc even if they are only out for 5 mins?

  2. Does your child have good footwear? What activity are they doing? Do they need supportive trainers, walking boots to support their ankles and knees, studded football boots? Do they require insoles or orthotics? Speak to your physiotherapist if you are unsure of these things.

  3. Children are notoriously bendy and flexible. Make sure if they are doing dance, yoga and gymnastics that their coaches are also working on their strength too. This will support their joints and can prevent injuries. This may include some static bodyweight exercises or jumping movements.

  4. Children need rest days too. If they've been playing or doing sports they should try to have 1-2 rest days a week to ensure muscle and joint recovery.

  5. Movement is vital! Children who do not exercise may be prone to bone density problemS, poor bone and muscle development and may be at risk of fractures. If your child doesn't enjoy sports just play actively for 30 minutes a day or go for a walk in the forest!

Children are resilient and don’t tend to get injured due to the nature of their soft tissues, posture and lack of wear and tear on the joints. If your child is in pain please do not ignore it. Take them to their GP or contact your physio today.

Please note, if you would like to talk to a physio in confidence about any injury your child has suffered you can use our safe phrase 'I'd like to buy your toy box" when you email or phone.
